John Deere 2 Cylinder Power Steering Pump Rebuilding
We have been rebuilding John Deere Power Steering Pumps and Steering Control Valves for a couple of years now.
Many of these pumps have bad shafts due to spline wear or broken key inside the drive gear. These pump are the main cause for loss of pressure and can stop working suddenly. Sometimes the spline end from the governor are completely worn out and the fan blade will either not turn at all or you will see the fan blade skip. The drive coupler is also a culprit and can cause the same problem. The front seal area of the shaft should be like brand new. Otherwise the pump sucks in air causing the fluid to blow out the breather dipstick. Not all dipsticks have a breather, but the oil will become foam because of the air. Be sure to use the proper oil also. Many folks make the mistake and use 303 hydraulic oil. The OEM style oil is a thicker, gear lube and is a must to have proper steering.
There are two different styles of power steering pump on these tractors. The early style has the pressure regulator on the side of the power steering pump. The later tractors have the pressure regulator on the steering column.
If you change the style of pump, you must also replace the control valve on the steering post.
